Hello! I am Heather Ikerd, your PTA President for the 2016-2017 school year. My daughter will be entering the 4th grade at Montevideo this year. It seems like just yesterday that I was helping her Kindergarten class walk to the Book Fair and cheering on her 1st grade class in the Jog-a-thon. I can remember my first PTA meeting and the revelation I had when it was over. “WOW! I can’t believe this group of people, the PTA, is making ALL this AWESOME stuff happen at our school, and that it would not be happening if it were not for the PTA and all the folks who donate their time and/or money to support our children, teachers and school.”
Needless to say, I am very excited about being the PTA President this year and I hope that you all will get a chance to come to at least one of our meetings and be inspired to be a Super Hero and do whatever you can to help out with all the different programs, events and activities we offer. Our first PTA meeting is Tuesday, September 6th at 7:00pm in the PTA room. Come early to meet some other parents and have some hors d'oeuvres. The PTA meetings are where you can hear about things happening at school and from Mrs. Montgomery, our Principal first hand, have your voice heard on items we are planning for the future, and sign up to volunteer for what interests you the most.
We will be kicking off the year with a BANG! With some of our Family Fun Events such as Family Lunch on Friday 9/30, the Book Fair the week of 10/3 and Marathon Club in October. We will also have our Mixed Bags Fund Raiser starting in the fall, returning after a couple years off. You can count on all the favorites returning later in the year, such as Movie Night, Talent Show and Spring Fling as well as the Jog-a-thon.
September is when we kick off our PTA Membership Drive. Look for the membership sign-up forms in your child’s first day packet. The money raised through PTA Membership helps us fund our enrichment programs, for all kids at our school, including Meet the Masters art program, Class Act music program and the hands-on science lab. Being a member doesn’t obligate you to volunteer but it does add you to the list of Super Heros that are making things happen at Montevideo.
We will do our best to keep you informed of all the things happening at Montevideo through this newsletter, Montevideo Vistas, flyers we send home with the children, email reminders and Face Book Page.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey we sent out at the end of the year last year. We will be reviewing everyone’s feedback and using this to guide us in our planning for 2017-2018. The feedback was very positive for the most part. It became clear to me that we need to do a better job of clarifying for all of you when something is a ‘Family Fun Event’, offered simply for the sake of fun or a ‘Fund Raiser’, where the money we are collecting goes above and beyond covering our costs and the donated profits go towards funding our ‘Enrichment Programs’, like Meet the Masters, Class Act and Science.
It is going to be an AMAZING year. Thank you to all of our SUPER HEROS who make Montevideo the best school it can be!
I volunteer. What’s your Superpower? Whatever it is, please share it with us!
